Types of Injection Moldable Plastic Materials that We Work With :
Some of the popular types of injection molding plastic materials we work with include the following.
- PEEK (Polyether ether Ketone): This is a transparent thermoplastic polymer used mainly in engineering applications. PEEK is a durable, heat, and chemical resistant plastic material. It is used in complex applications such as piston parts, bearings, pumps, HPLC columns, etc. Its biocompatibility makes it ideal for use in aerospace moldings, medical implants, etc.
- ULTEM: These plastic resins have high dielectric strength, and possess brilliant mechanical properties. These resins are used in various chemical instrumentation and medical devices due to their high solvent, heat, and flame resistance properties. These resins have a temperature limit of 340 °F.
- Liquid Crystal Polymers: Abbreviated as LCP, these polymers exhibit high tensile strength, and have high heat and chemical resistance. These polymers form areas of ordered structures in liquid phase, but the degree of order weakens in solid form. We work with the following types of injection moldable LCPs.
- ZENITE: This liquid crystal polymer has got 45% glass fiber filler, and is used for injection molding intricate industrial parts. This plastic is used for making housings, electronic packaging, microwave oven parts, semiconductor equipment components, etc.
- VECTRA: This is a liquid crystal polymer, which exhibits high flame retardant properties as well as excellent mechanical properties. It has good dimensional stability, chemical resistance, high heat resistance, and low warpage.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene): This plastic provides a combination of mechanical toughness, broad operation temperature range, high electric resistance, chemical resistance, and easy fabrication. ABS plastic is available in a wide variety of grades specifically created to exhibit certain properties such as high impact resistance, flame retardant properties, etc.
- Polycarbonate: The plastics exhibit high clarity, high impact strength, good chemical resistance, flammability, and optical properties. These plastics have excellent mechanical properties, which allow them to be molded within tight tolerances.
- Nylon (Polyamide): These are polymers with semi-crystalline structures. This plastic has good performance to cost ratios. These are always combined with fillers, reinforcements, and additives due to their excellent mechanical properties. The nylon resists abrasion, and can withstand temperatures up to 700 °F for short time periods. The plastic has superior color fastness, which is why it is used in various applications.
- Acetyl: These polymers are semi-crystalline and provide excellent chemical and fatigue resistance as well as lubricity. Some common applications include door handles, seat belt parts, cams, etc.
- Acrylic: The acrylic is a transparent material that resists UV rays and weather elements to provide lasting performance. This plastic can be dyed, formed, or drilled to suit requirements. Acrylic is a perfect alternative to polycarbonate (PC), and is considered for its easy handling, and processing properties.
- Polyethylene: This is one of the widely used thermoplastics, and can be easily fabricated. This plastic is comparatively softer than other types, and cannot be used for applications above 50oC. These plastic materials are lightweight, exhibit high chemical resistance, and insulation properties.
- PET Polyester (Polyethylene Terephthalate): These polymers are semi-crystalline and exhibit a wide range of mechanical and chemical properties. This plastic is abrasion resistant, and is used in the production of various daily use items such as reusable bottles, bottle sterilizer lids, sippy cups, housewares, and medical devices.
- Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT): This is a thermoplastic material used as an insulator in electronics, automotive construction, and household items. PBT is also used as fibers in toothbrushes and yarns.
- High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): This is a widely used thermoplastic. This plastic can resist moisture and high impact. This plastic is available in FDA approved grades, and is affordable.
- Polystyrene: This polymer can be in a solid, or foam form. Polystyrene is hard, brittle and clear. It has a low melting point, and is one of the most popular types of industrial grade plastics. Abbreviated as PS, this plastic is colorfast. Polystyrene is used to create protective packaging, bottles, lids, trays, and disposable plates.
- High Density Polystyrene (HDPS):This is a synthetic polymer, which is used in the production of foams, molded polystyrene, water absorption foams, etc. This plastic exhibits better insulation properties at low temperatures.
- Polyester: This is a category of stretchable plastic polymers, which can be thermoset or thermoplastic depending on their chemical structures. Thermoplastic polyesters change their shape when exposed to heat. Some of the general properties include high tenacity, low water absorption, and minimal shrinking when compared to other types of industrial fibers.
- Polyurethane: This is a highly resilient plastic polymer, which exhibits excellent tear and chemical resistance. Polyurethane is abbreviated as PU, and is available in a wide range of densities, and hardness levels. Some of the common applications of this polymer are bushings, gaskets, seals, and electronic parts.
- Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): This is one of the widely used and inexpensive thermoplastic with excellent lubricity. This plastic is soft, easy to fabricate, and is not recommended for applications above 150 oF. This polymer is lightweight, tough and possesses electrical insulation properties as well as high chemical resistance.
- Polypropylene: This is a semi-crystalline polymer, which can be structurally altered to meet process requirements across a wide range of temperatures. Polypropylene has high chemical resistance, and a wide temperature range. It shows good dimensional stability under humid conditions. - Copolymer Polypropylene: This polymer is known for its versatility, and exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as easy fabrication, high impact, chemical, and corrosion resistance. This plastic is FDA approved.
